Orkos is on the western side of Naxos, where the island’s mountain line drops down to the sea. It is a neighbourhood of holiday houses, rooms to let and small hotels — no beach bars, no night noise. In spring the sunsets are at their best.
The beaches The water is around 100 metres away in a straight line. Walk right or left along the coast and you pass Plaka, Orkos and a series of small coves before reaching Mikri Vigla. The bay is one of the main kitesurfing and windsurfing spots on the island, with schools operating through the season.
Everyday essentials Mikri Vigla, 800–1,500 metres away depending on where you’re going, has two supermarkets, a bakery with a café and pastries, three tavernas, restaurants and café, a grill house and the kitesurf schools.
Getting around Naxos Town is about 10 km away and connected by public bus; the port and airport are both there. A car or scooter is worth having if you plan to reach the mountain villages, Apollonas or the beaches further south.
